Chat/Discussion Kind of like a VW club online - you can sit in our virtual pub and talk about whatever you want to. All opinions are valid, but please no insulting (other than to our intelligence,) abusive or libellous posts. Please feel free to post your opinion on any given subject, but also be aware that others have the equal right to disagree with you - and some will certainly tell you so. No 'For Sale' or 'Want To Buy' ads, plugs for your business, links to 'for sale' ads or Ebay links to your (or your mate's) auction (please use the VZi 'Classifieds' section) - this also includes thinly veiled "What's my car worth?" threads too (please use the 'Dude! What's My Car Worth?' forum) - and please don't use just to post links to other VW forums or websites - we are aware that other sites exist (obviously), but blatant 'plugs' (poaching) will simply be deleted.

Default Cat d back on the road

Any insurance gurus out there? My vrs had someone hit it in a car park and the insurance company wrote it off - needed a headlight, small rear corner pull and bumper reattaching. I did the work it just needs a bit of filler and paint on the rear corner and then some woman in a car swapped lanes and whacked the front wing. This is where it gets interesting- the insurance company reckons the car is now only worth salvage value as even though it was road worthy it wasn't fully repaired! Is this right?

I bought my 2010 Cube as a repairable Cat D with a front end bump. Paid 2250, spent 2000 getting it fixed and insure it at 5000 value which now, 3 years later is what a normal one is worth.

No problems with insurance or anything, just fixed it and MOT'd it.

Your car would be valued at about a third less than standard due to the origial repair but you can proove it wasn't serious damage.

The first bump rote it off, paid out and I bought it back and put it on the road it just needed a bit of paint, then it was hit again but they are saying it wasn't a full repair so is only worth salvage value. Cat d takes 20% off the value but that's irrelevant. 2440 ad a cat d 460 as salvage is what they are trying to swing.

But from the insurance point of view they have already paid out to you the value of the car. How many minor shunts can you keep having and expect to get the same money back?

If it's back on the road and safe it shouldn't matter. If bought another car that was already cat d but say the wing was a different colour as that bit hadn't been sprayed yet, then this woman hit me would that car only be worth salvage value or the -20% a cat d takes off the retail value?

I always thought that an insurance company would only pay out once in a cars life, thats the penalty that is paid for putting a written off car back on the road.

Mine was paid out twice, but 20% less as cat d.

I'd go back to them saying it was roadworthy but not painted. The paint quote was 300 ( or whatever it was) so the value is that not salvage

When my siblings and I were learning to drive in the late 80s/early 90s our insurer paid to repair our car on 3 separate occasions when it was written off each time.

3 Times I bet your parents were pleased about that.
